4 University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta)

Alberta is the one we suggest when a student wants a top-100 university but doesn’t want rent to eat half the budget. On the whole, costs are generally cheaper in Edmonton than in Toronto or Vancouver, and engineering and energy are the strengths of this university. A word of warning: the weather is known to be bloody cold during winter, so come prepared.

Campus: North Campus in Edmonton, the city and province’s largest, as well as the smaller Augustana Campus in Camrose.

Ask a few students who’ve been there and you’ll hear the same two things: the campus feels like a proper university town, and Ivey is the dream. Ivey Business School runs the HBA, one of the best-known business degrees in the country, and Western lets you aim for it from day one. You don’t walk straight in, though. You spend two years in another degree first, so the early marks matter a lot.

Campus: Main campus in London, Ontario, a friendly mid-sized city about two hours from Toronto.

QS World Ranking 2026: 151

What you can study:

  • Data and technology
  • Business and management

  • Additional Courses (MBA): approximately CAD 136,310 for the complete degree

10. Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario)

Reasons Indian students choose it: Queen’s is where you’d hear the word ‘close-knit’ used often. It’s a smaller town and has a small student population and a reputation for serious business and engineering. Because it’s home to Smith School of Business, which offers the Commerce degree and the MBA, and keen to put Queen’s on the map, Indian students will want to stay in Kingston—or nearby—to keep the party going.
Campus: Main campus in Kingston, Ontario, on the shores of Lake Ontario about halfway between Toronto and Montreal.

QS World Rank 2026: 191

What you can study:

– Computing and Tech

Deciding on the top universities in Canada for Indian students can be daunting. Get expert advice at Transglobal Overseas Education Consultants to find out about courses, admission requirements, and plans. Let’s Plan Together

1. Which are the best universities in Canada for Indian students 2026-27?

In my opinion it’s not one “best” – it really depends on what you’re planning to study. Based on general reputation and popular programs among Indian students these days it has to be University of Toronto, UBC, McGill, Alberta, Waterloo and McMaster. (Make sure your grades and finances match)
2. How much does it cost for an Indian student to study in a Canadian university?
It honestly, really varies a lot. Tuition (this is for tuition only and can range from about CAD 30K to over CAD 70K a year (masters and Bachelor’s can be separate), and an MBA can cost a lot more). And then you add rent, the average UK grocery bill, and insurances, which all vary widely by city.

3. Is the University of Toronto worth its high international tuition fees?

It is a research university and is very prestigious nationally so if that is the kind of brand name you want in your CV then it can be that. But it’s very expensive and there’s cut-throat competition for places. If you can afford it and get in then fine, but otherwise there’s other reputable Canadian universities that are not quite so expensive.
4. What is the most desirable university to apply to – UBC, McGill or University of Toronto?
The million-dollar question! U of T is like the big city corporate world in Toronto; McGill gives you that old-world European charm in Montreal; and UBC is right there on the West Coast in Vancouver. Pick from these criteria of yours: style, climate (wintertime in Montreal can be brutal!), and how strong they are in your individual major department.

5. In 2026, should Indian students still study in Canada?

Yes, although be more realistic. The standard of education remains superb but arrangements for immigration, numbers of visas and the cost of living has become much more complex in recent times. Provided you have clear career ambitions and alternative fund sources, you will still have a wonderful experience.
6. What are the best universities in Canada for Indian students after Class 12?
Right after school, the higher-ranked universities such as U of T, UBC, McGill, Alberta and TMU (Toronto Metropolitan), have strong infrastructure for IGS – your Class 12 (CBSE/ISC) board performance and individual subject grades, which will matter a lot.

7. Which Canadian universities have low tuition fees for Indian students?

Overall, tuition fees are slightly less at a university located in a province other than Ontario or British Columbia, such as the University of Alberta, the University of Manitoba or Memorial University, and accommodation costs are a lot cheaper.

8. Can an Indian student apply to Canadian university?

For undergrads, they’ll look at your Class 12 percentages and scores for each subject. For master’s, you’ll need a good 3- or 4-year bachelor’s degree. All of them will require an English language test such as IELTS, and more competitive ones will require a GRE/GMAT or some work experience.

9. Which Canadian universities offer scholarships to Indian students?

Yes, Entrance Scholarships by U of T (Lester B. Pearson scholarship), UBC, McGill, and other big names are available but it is very competitive, and only the top cream receives it academically. Don’t expect it to fund your complete degree.

10. Q. What IELTS score do top universities in Canada expect?

For the average undergraduate and general graduate programs, the bar is set at least 6.5 overall with no section less than a 6.0. However, for competitive programs such as business, law and education at the top-ranked universities, that requirement is often upgraded to an overall 7.0.

11. What are the top 10 universities in Canada for Indian students?

The typical top bunch over the years is: Although the positions change from year to year, here is the typical top bracket:

  • University of Toronto
  • McGill University
  • University of British Columbia
  • University of Alberta
  • McMaster University
  • University of Waterloo
  • Université de Montréal
  • University of Ottawa
  • Western University
  • Queen’s University

Select a shape and which city you want, instead of go for the rank.

12. What is the tuition fee for Indian students in Canadian universities?

Cost of undergraduate program Cost for UG program for 2026-27 will range from CAD 35,000 CAD pa to CAD 75,000+ pa or even much higher for professional master’s and MBA programs. Always verify the public-facing international fee calculator of the respective university before applying.
13. What are the best universities in Canada for Indian students for Master courses?
Companies who love research, tech and business networks include U of T, UBC, McGill, Waterloo (big in tech) and Alberta. Check whether the master’s is a course or thesis as they are worlds apart with very different timelines.

14. What are the cheapest universities in Canada for international students?

In many of the smaller city/ provincial towns, like in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, or any other towns in Alberta, the rate for international students is much lower than what it is in the heart of Toronto or Vancouver. Memorial University is one such example from Newfoundland.

15. What are the Admission requirements of Canadian university for September 2027 intake?

You will send the schools your academic transcripts, English language test score (IELTS), recommendation letters and an excellent SOP. The deadlines are often pretty early (December-March for fall intake) therefore you should prepare your application documents in advance.
